UPDATE 1: I’ve added a couple of days in Denver! If you’re in Denver, keep reading… though UPDATE 2 doesn’t pertain to you, so feel free to skip it.

UPDATE 2: I have studio time at Starr Street Studios, 207 Starr Street, #3-1, Brooklyn, NY 11237

Friday June 7th: noon – 4pm
Monday June 10th: 6pm – 8pm Monday is now full

If those studio times work for you, fantastic! Let me know your preferred time, and we’ll get it all planned and plotted.
If the studio times don’t work for you, or if you have a location you’d prefer to use, fantastic! Let me know and we’ll make that work, too. If there’s enough interest, I can add more studio time, but other locations are fine for me.

UPDATE THREE: A lot of you have asked me the same questions, so… here’s the FAQ section:

  • All shoots will probably last around twenty minutes-ish.
  • This really just a test shoot to see how we work together. It’s basically a super low pressure portrait shoot, and while I would prefer you not wear much makeup, I encourage you to look however you want to look, and wear what you want to wear.
  • I will email each model a link to download large format JPGs of their shoot after I’m finished editing them.
  • Denver people! I’m working on getting studio space and will update as soon as I have a location.

Thank you for your interest! The shoots in both New York and Denver are going to be made up of a series of portraits, which will be a precursor to a second shoot later this year (or early next year) for my project VIRAGO. Basically, these shoots in June are a way for us to see how we work together, and to prepare for a more involved shoot in the near future.

I’m interested in photographing both men and women while I’m in town in June, though I will be working just with women for the VIRAGO shoots.

I’ve had a lot of people reach out to be a part of the shoots and/or to learn more about it, so… here’s the official description:

In current usage, a “virago” is an opinionated, aggressive, loud-voiced, ill-tempered, shrewish woman. The original meaning of the word, though, was a woman of strength or spirit, a powerful woman, a warrior woman.
VIRAGO is a collection of strong women, powerful women… warriors wearing their armor.
The minimum age for involvement is 18.
The intention of this new collection is to produce a collected, limited edition art album and accompanying gallery collection, the proceeds of which will go to benefit LGBTQIA youth in the Louisville, Kentucky area.

If you’re interested in being a model, here’s what I need you to think about:

  • What makes you strong? Think about your power; think about the events that made you the strong person you are today; think about the steel at the core of you. What does it feel like? How do you express it (in both the loud and the quiet ways)?
  • What is your armor? It doesn’t have to be just clothing; it could be a look, the way you stand, a piece of jewelry, how you apply your make-up (or choose not to wear any). What does the armor of a warrior woman mean to you, and how does it apply to your life?
  • How would you like to be portrayed? (If you don’t know how you want to be portrayed, don’t worry! We’ll come up with something together.)
  • Are you comfortable posing nude? I’ve said before there is no expectation for this, and there will be no pressure to do so. If you’re not, please make sure you’re comfortable being part of a collection and accompanying book that will have nudity in it.
  • I will not be providing hair and makeup (at least I do not currently plan to, though this may change before I schedule the shoots for VIRAGO), and I will be relying on your knowledge of the city with regards to locations (especially in Denver, where I will not have studio space).

If this still sounds like something you want to be a part of, email me at mail@gbenjaminensor.com with your thoughts on those above questions, your name on Instagram (if that’s where you found me), and/or a photo of yourself (if you didn’t find me on Instagram), and we will work together on coming up with a shoot. As I said, we might not be able to get to everyone this visit, but that’s ok because it gives me an excuse to come back to New York more often.

Thank you for being interested in a shoot, and this project.
